Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® seeks to build upon our rich legacy of service by galvanizing the legacy of our sisterhood to lead on the front lines of change, education, and advocacy. The Iota Zeta Omega chapter is dedicated to carrying out the the sorority's mission.
Elevated in Service
For over 100 years our sorority's mission is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote friendship among college women, to study and alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life and to be of "service to all mankind"
Ascending in Sisterhood
Iota Zeta Omega graduate chapter boasts a rich history in Des Moines. Our chapter is home to the first Black woman pharmacist in Iowa, the first Black woman teacher in Des Moines Public Schools, the first Black woman dean of the Des Moines Area Community College - Urban Campus, the first Black woman elected to the Des Moines School Board, the first Black woman director of the Des Moines Public Library, the first Black officer promoted to major in the Des Moines Police Department, the first Black woman elected in District 31 to the Iowa House of Representatives, the first Black woman factory manager at John Deere, and the 26th and 30th AKA Mid-Western Regional Directors, to name a few.
