History
Created in 2017, the Iowa Ivy Foundation operates as the philanthropic arm of the Iota Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. The Foundation serves as a vital financial and organizational engine that transforms community goals into sustainable, long-term civic initiatives.
While the legacy of its partner chapter dates back to 1932, the Iowa Ivy Foundation was formally established in late 2017 and received its official tax-exempt public charity status in February 2018. The foundation was created to establish a structured, non-profit entity capable of securing grants, managing corporate sponsorships, and expanding the reach of community outreach programs across Greater Des Moines.
Driven by civic-minded African American women and community leaders—such as prominent local board members like Dr. Mary Chapman, Ms. Jacquie Easley McGhee, the Honorable Ashley Stewart, Dr. Jihna Jenkins, Ms. Jerrica Marshall, and Ms. Twyla Woods Buford—the foundation quickly organized to back initiatives focusing on systemic equity, economic mobility, and youth development.
The Iowa Ivy Foundation is an Iowa non-profit public benefit, community based organization, recognized as tax exempt under Section 501 (c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code. The business of the organization may be conducted as Iowa Ivy or Iowa Ivy Foundation.
